What are cookies?

A "cookie" is a small piece of text or information that a web server can store on your computer by a web browser. Cookies allow a website to store information and later retrieve it when needed.
 
What are they used for?
We use cookies to enable us to give our members a better surfing experience by granting access to certain areas of the site where User participation is required (such as the discussion rooms/polls and chat).

They are also used to store preferences of a user. Both Microsoft and Netscape use cookies to enable you to create personal start pages. Common uses for cookies are listed below:

  • Personalise the site.
    This is one of the best uses for cookies, if someone comes to our site often, but doesn't want to see any of the news that we have available, they can personalise the cookie so that the news is never seen by them. In time we will enable our cookies to allow personalisation like this.

  • Website Tracking.
    Site tracking can show up "Dead End Paths", places in the website that people go to and then leave quickly because they don't have any more interesting links to hit. Which enables us to re-vamp the poorer areas of the site, this combined with the user feedback emails, will mean that the site is designed more to the website user's needs and wishes.

Microsoft

For Microsoft Internet Explorer 4x:

 
  1. Click on the View menu
  2. Select Internet Options, A tabbed dialog should then appear
  3. Select the Advance tab, Under the Advance Tab should be a scrollable window
  4. Scroll through the Security settings until you find Cookie option
  5. Under Always accept cookies make sure Enable or Prompt is checked
  6. Under Prompt before accepting cookies make sure Enable or Prompt is checked
  7. Click OK to finish
 
 

For Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x:

 
  1. Click on the Tools menu (at the very top of your window)
  2. Select Internet Options
  3. Switch to the Security tab
  4. Click on Internet in the Select a Web content zone
  5. Further down, press the Custom Level button
  6. Scroll down to the Cookies section in the Settings: box
  7. Click on Enable for Allow cookies that are stored option
  8. Click on Enable for Allow per-session cookies option

 

  
 

For Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0:

 

  1. Choose Tools, then
  2. Internet Options
  3. Click the Privacy tab
  4. Default setting is Medium. Move the slider to determine which setting you prefer (You will need at least Medium to accept the cookie from our site)
  5. You can also click on Advanced for specialized cookie treatment
 

Netscape

For Netscape Navigator:


  1. Click on the Edit menu (at the very top of your window)
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Click on Advanced in the Category: box
  4. Click on Accept all cookies in the Cookies box

 
 

For Netscape Navigator 3.0:


  1. Open Network Preferences under the Options menu
  2. Click on the Protocols tab and ensure that the box next to Accepting a Cookie is unchecked

 
 

For Netscape 3.x:


  1. Choose the Options menu
  2. Select Network Preferences
  3. Click on the Protocols tab
  4. Verify that the box Show an alert before accepting a Cookie is unchecked
  5. Click OK
  6. Close your web browser and restart it by re-opening it

 
 

For Netscape 4.x and up:


  1. Choose the Edit menu
  2. Select Preferences
  3. In the white box on the left, click once on the word Advanced
  4. Verify that the boxes Accept all cookies or Only accept cookies originating from the same server as the page being viewed are checked. If they are not, click on the box to enable it
  5. Click OK
  6. Close your web browser and restart it by re-opening it

 

  
 

For Netscape Communicator 4.0:

 

  1. Choose Edit -> Preferences, then click on Advanced
  2. Select the radio button next to Accept all cookies and click OK

 

  


AOL


If you are an AOL client using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, you could receive an error such as this one:

"Your request could not be served because you have browser cookies disabled. Please enable cookies in your browser's settings, close your current web session and try again."


AOL 8.0:


  1. From the AOL Toolbar, select Settings
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Select Internet Properties (WWW)
  4. Select the Privacy tab
  5. Select Advanced
  6. Deselect override automatic cookie handling button
  7. Click OK to exit

 

AOL 7.0 with IE 6.x:


  1. From the AOL Toolbar, select Settings
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Select Internet Properties (WWW)
  4. Select the Privacy tab
  5. Select Advanced
  6. Deselect override automatic cookie handling button
  7. Click OK to exit

 

AOL 7.0 with IE 5.5:


  1. From the AOL Toolbar, select Settings
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Select Internet Properties (WWW)
  4. Select the Security tab
  5. Select the Custom Level tab
  6. Under "Allow Cookies that are stored on your computer" click "Enable"
  7. Under "Allow per-session cookies (not stored)" click "Enable"
  8. Select OK, Yes you want to save the settings

 

AOL 6.0:

 

  1. From the AOL Toolbar, select Settings
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Select Internet Properties (WWW)
  4. Select the Security tab
  5. Select the Custom Level tab
  6. Under "Allow Cookies that are stored on your computer" click "Enable"
  7. Under "Allow per-session cookies (not stored)" click "Enable"
  8. Select OK, Yes you want to save the settings
 

AOL 5.0:

 
  1. Go to My AOL
  2. Pick WWW
  3. Click the Security tab
  4. Go to Custom Level
  5. Scroll down to find Cookie
  6. Click "Enable"
  7. Click OK

 

  

AOL 4.0:


  1. Click on Preferences
  2. Select on the WWW button
  3. Click on the Advanced tab
  4. Select the "Accept all cookies" checkbox

 

AOL for Windows 3.1:

 


Browser does not give you the ability to turn off cookies



  


Apple Mac users


Mac IE 5.x:

 

  1. Click Edit
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Under the Receiving Files option, select Cookies
  4. Under "When receiving cookies:" select the desired level of cookie acceptance
  5. Click OK to finish
 

Mac IE 4.x:

 

  1. Go to My AOL on the menu bar
  2. Pick WWW
  3. Go to the Advanced Settings option on the Category menu
  4. Click "Cookies"
  5. When receiving cookies: Click "Never Ask"
  6. Click OK
